Got the sense that this started out as a short story screaming to be turned into a novel. I’m very glad Yuszczuk followed that impulse!

Heather Cleary’s English translation is so moody and macabre and drew me right in. This is a modern Gothic treasure to me.

Overall, this was a good read. There was an abrupt shift in narration and some discontinuity throughout - including an ending that left me somewhat confused. But, the writing kept me engaged and as my first foray as an adult into a more fantasy-esque genre, I liked it.

It shouldn’t be news by this point that I’m such a sucker for vampire novels. But a queer vampire novel? About grief and loss and love? This beautiful, heartbreaking, moving gothic across time checked all the boxes for me
