I am struggling a little to put my thoughts on this book into coherent sentences. I know for sure I really enjoyed it and appreciated the story and its hidden depths. I liked the choice to have the novel in two parts, the first with our unnamed vampire and the second with our grieving single mother just trying to get through each day. I liked both parts for very different reasons. The first part I enjoyed because I love vampire stories and this one was less about motivations and romance and simply a tale of survival. I think it links wonderfully to the latter part of the novel where Alma is trying to get through each day. Her story is interesting because she is grieving a mother that is slowly dying whilst trying to navigate her own life. You see a little more of her motivations and thoughts, giving you justification for her actions at the end of the novel. It was an interesting ending, especially based on what you learn about both characters but the more you think about it and their respective journeys, the more it makes sense. I found the writing style engaging, especially when the pace picked up in the second half. Overall, a fantastic read, definitely glad I picked it up!

This novel is split in two parts: the first is a Gothic historical romp, which is pretty standard vampire fare; the second is set in the present, as a series of diary entries from a single mother reflecting on the terminal condition of her mother. The two halves complement each other, and the novel is a single, unified story. But, as a reader I did find the second part far more compelling and complex than the first half, which I struggled to remember (even in such a short book). The second half is not without its problems, however: there's a lot of plot that has to happen very fast, and the sapphic romance feels remarkably underdeveloped. But it's moody and atmospheric. Perhaps this book could have worked as a diptych, but maybe if each half were a hundred more pages, to develop the characters and contour the romance more (or, better yet, drop the first half of the novel entirely).
A good book -- could have been great, but worth reading for fans of Latin American horror and vampire tales in the vein of Carmilla.

Less sapphic than it is just straight vampire. I wish it was longer so we could understand our main (human) characters motivations better. Leaving her son to join the vampire that she just met is kinda cuckoooooo. Still enjoyed it tho!
