i thought i was going to give this book my ‘run of the mill, pretty decent book’ score of 3. but the last 15 ish chapters were beautiful and made me think about my own future.

i am terrified of losing the people i love and being confronted with a lot of loss in the final stretch of this book was incredibly impactful.

many a tear was shed.

I have so many emotions about this book. 

This book wasn’t what I expected it be. I have avoided it for a long time due to everyone loving it, and was scared that because it’s not my usual read, and the hype behind it, I would be underwhelmed by it.

But I wasn’t.

This book is about a morally grey woman who will do anything - and everything - to get what she wants. A powerful, flawed woman who goes through so much in her life, and watching it come together and to fall is just an amazing reading experience. 
This book has some lovely quotes in it, such as “be wary of men with something to prove”. I would want to say more but I don’t want to spoil it. 

I think the only thing that made me rate this less than a 5 star was the actual main character, Monique. Yes, she was good but I felt like her whole story was just boring compared to Evelyn’s own - and maybe that was the point.

Evelyn Hugo, you are correct, you will not be remembered by your multiple husbands, but for your own story.

Evelyn Hugo is a quintessential fictional biography that has consumed my waking moments. If you do anything, it should be to read this novel.

I went into the novel with just the hint that its main character was this blonde bombshell in the 1950s resembling Marylyn Monroe. I didn’t know there’d be such depth tying into her marriages and complexity of Evelyn Hugo’s Character. The constant balancing act of being a celebrity proves to be draining for the humanity especially the ruthless tabloids of the 50s-80s.

The title and appearance of the novel is so misleading I love that :)) Celia and Evelyn’ love story was  incredibly compelling. You can’t help but feel for both of them and their povs. Their tug of war between doing what they think is right for each other but in another sense still worrying about the wrong things really shakes the reader (me) irl. I basically loooved reading about Evelyn’s life but didn’t care much for Monique’s pov.. her subplot was a bit boring. The plot twist tho!? That actually shocked the hell outta me.  So many quotable moments in the last 100 pages.

This was easily the most beautiful, heartbreaking book I've ever had the pleasure to read. Evelyn Hugo is an incredibly compelling, deep character that perfectly depicts the human experience with - or maybe because - all of its flaws.

there’s definitely a lot of moments here that annoyed me or didn’t feel quite right (stories, especially those written by straight people, where one person in a same sex relationship is pressuring the other to come out, will never sit right with me) but i’ve gotta admit that there’s something so special about this book. the characters all just feel so real. it’s almost jarring to finish it and remember we live in a world where evelyn hugo does not actually exist. from the moment her narration starts you get swept up in her, everything about her life not only super engaging but so utterly real feeling. minor complaints here or there aside, i can see why everyone was so obsessed with this when it came out. really easy book to connect with. deeply felt.

5 stars doesn't seem like enough for this book. It'll make you laugh. It'll make you cry. And it'll make you cry some more. The author makes you feel every single word and scene in your heart. I highly recommend!
