this book was pretty good. i really enjoyed it but the only reason i rated it so low was the use of homophobic slurs. for the author to be a cis/het woman and use a homophobic slur in a book written in 2017 it’s disgusting. this book is so hyped and it is so well written but the slurs are horrific. even if it was to be “historically accurate” it was entirely unnecessary.

To put it simply... this is the first book I've read with
a bisexual character in it (if we're ignoring Dracula). And the fact that it's the female protagonist is the beautiful rainbow icing on the cake
. This book will forever hold a piece of my heart because of that.

Otherwise, this book showcases the complexity of love, relationships, and above all else: women and their femininity. There were a few moments in the book that felt abrupt
(the Max Girard romance/marriage was surprisingly surface level, which I suppose has a message in itself...it just felt abrupt in comparison to all the other romances)
and others that felt overdone
(Monique's wallowing monologues of her divorce in the beginning... honestly the majority of her personal content in the first 3/4 of the book. I loved Evelyn and honestly wasn't interested in Monique's perspective, but I understand why this was an interesting facet in the book.)
, but Jenkins Reid's wordplay and timing are amazing throughout. I will definitely be reading more of Taylor Jenkins Reid's material after this experience!

I would recommend this book to any woman
whether queer or straight
! I'm sad to have finished it, and I think that says something about the quality of a book. I loved learning more about Evelyn every day. I want more, even if it's just pointless filler, but things ended on my terms and because of that, I am happy!

I am speechless sitting here, ugly-cry-tears on my face, in the library of my university. I just couldn’t stop reading from 60-100%. I was scared the amazing reviews Would have mislead me into buying a mediocre/bad book, but I honestly the praise it gets doesn’t even cover this story positively enough.

I added a spoiler-warning, so be aware… I have some things to say and some emotions to express. (I wrote this immediately after finishing the book)

The characters=
Monique and Evelyn are easy to fall in love with and to live with them through all the heartache. I hated the characters Taylor Jenkins Reid intended to be hated and I loved the characters who were intended to be loved.

Heartache =
Especially in the last chapters. My heart broke from the minute Harry died. My heart shattered when Celia died, And I haven’t even talked about the 2 points that hurt the most…

Topic 1:
LGBTQIA+=
The big plottwist: Evelyn framed Monique’s dad for Harries and his death… reading her dead was just like Harry and loved Monique even more… gosh darnit it broke me… don’t get me wrong, I love the Celia x Evelyn storyarch (and the fact that historical queer moments also existed in this fictional story, like the Stonewall Riot) but the dad … that part was soul crushing.
However, I am sure this emotion is partly to me being in the LGBTQIA+ community!

Topic 2:
Cancer=
Her daughter died of breastcancer… Evelyn had breast cancer. It hit home and it hit home hard. By that time Evelyn lost absolutely everybody and I was certain the book would leave me sobbing.

There’s so many other things that are amazingly addressed in this book, like: domestic abuse, confidence, sexism, manipulation, etc, etc. It is too much to write down.

Conclusion: I thought The Midnight Library was the peak for this year already. I was wrong
