This book as many could attest to is a tempestuous journey. Forget the husbands, Evelyn showcases the very essence it is to grapple with being queer and vulnerable and to live with that throughout a time where that would wreck a persons livelihood. But this book is not just that, and that alone makes it beautiful. Evelyn Hugo touches on how multifaceted life truly is, this book truly encapsulates how dimensional existence is.

I zoomed through this book. I was really compelled to find out all its secrets. But now that I'm done, I'm not sure how o feel about it. The ending should have had more to it after a major revelation late in the book. The handling of race was clumsy. But I loved the fictionalization of a situation many in Hollywood found themselves in.

I very much enjoyed this book. I saw the plot twist coming, but I was still interested in getting to the end. The format was original and intriguing. I’m reminded of Reid’s other book Daisy Jones and the Six with its interview format. It’s not exaggerated to say the Reid has a great skill at untraditional storytelling methods. I would definitely recommend this book.

It felt like this book was trying to cover a lot of different themes and topics and this wasn't always done in a very nuanced or smooth way. It often felt like the author was directly telling you these big things to tick boxes, rather than leading the reader to them in a way that fit with the flow of the story. It's still a decent story, but I don't think it quite lives up to the extreme hype tiktok gave it.
