Oh, I know the whole world prefers a woman who doesn’t know her power, but I’m sick of all that. (p. 35)

Who was the love of Evelyn’s life? (p. 36)

I liked this book! Very dynamic dialogue-focused storytelling and lots of foreshadowing (including through metaphors). Messages were great too.

I thought the name of the novel was a particularly interesting choice on the author’s part, as the novel’s focus is Evelyn and her story.
Most of the husbands just happen to be there to further the plot and Evelyn’s character development rather than be well-developed characters themselves.

Evelyn was a very interesting character to read about—
a very calculating and ambitious individual, and yet not dislikeable.
I thought the character development was great,
and it was so sweet to see her find her way and discover love in the end. The love of her life question was revealed so nicely.

I didn’t like the plot twist at the end too much though… I think I felt a bit disconnected with the narrator, Monique, throughout the story,
so when Evelyn revealed what happened to James Grant, I was wondering who that was and why Monique was shocked…

Although it is a character-focused novel, I think I would have liked to see some more historical aspects outside of gender roles and life as an old Hollywood film star (although those topics were pretty well done!).

Solid 4.5⭐️

Taylor Jenkins Reid has definitely found a niche that works perfectly for her style of writing. This felt somewhat familiar because just like Daisy Jones and the Six. We have strong female protagonists that is being interviewed about her past and uses that monologue to leave life lessons for the reader.

Taylor has a way of blurring the line of history and fiction, to where she might almost have you fooled that you are reading a non-fiction.

Some of the themes of this book were personally a little much for me, and I figured out the twist as she was telling it, but I was still throughly entertained.

The glam, the drama, the horrible men (which is, once again, not surprising given they’re… well, men 🤢) and the absolutely wonderful Evelyn Hugo. A woman who knows what she wants and takes it, any way she can. She really embodies the saying ‘it’s not what the patriarchy does to you, but what it can do FOR you.’ I love the use of men for her own gain along with that of her lover and friends. Unfortunate that she developed love for a terrible abuser (fuck you, Adler, you insecure dickhead). Not that Evelyn herself was perfect, she did frustrate me many times with her choices, but she owns up to it. She doesn’t shy away from what she did, and that’s more than most can say, even if she doesn’t regret any of it. I still came to adore her, her life and the incredible secret love with her and her wife despite any choices I don’t agree with. I hope her and Celia enjoy being out together in the afterlife.
