Evelyn Hugo, world renowned movie star is ready to share her life story, but only with Monique Grant. Everyone is shocked, even Monique— she is a nobody, barely into her writing career.

Monique meets with Evelyn and hears every salacious detail about her life. Evelyn wants to make it very clear who she is— from making it to LA in the 1950s to her leaving the limelight in the 1980s. Not only is Evelyn beautiful and successful, she has also married seven different men. Every one of them have since passed, so Evelyn is the only one who can tell this story. Evelyn tells a tale of ruthless ambition, great friendships, and forbidden love. Evelyn may have loved many people, but there was only one true person for her. One that would shock everyone to their very core.

Monique begins to feel drawn to Evelyn and connects on a deeper level with the star. But she cannot help but wonder— why me? Why now? By the end of Evelyn’s tale, Monique realizes the tragic reasoning behind being chosen to write the stars biography.

This whole story was so addicting. Evelyn was such a fascinating person and the way she was willing to do whatever it took to rise to the top made for some crazy scenes. I felt every emotion under the sun while reading this— anger, fear, joy, sadness, etc. TJR wrote a spectacular masterpiece that I will be thinking about for years to come.

By the way— DON HATE CLUB!!!

I just finished rereading this for the third time and Jesus Christ.

I can’t remember the exact quote, but Virginia Woolf said the way we can mark our growth the most is by rereading the same book. And I’d be inclined to agree, because while I adored this book the other three times I read it (and I truly do mean adored), this book sunk so much deeper this time. I must have cried about four times during the last hundred or so pages. And the vastness of Evelyn’s journey, with all its sacrifices and mistakes and emotions, hit me insanely hard.

Besides the lessons, though (and there are many), it’s the characters that stick with you most—to the point where it feels wrong to even refer to them as characters. In my mind, they are real people whose journeys I’ve watched firsthand and thought about very frequently over the years. They are actual Golden Age of Hollywood celebrities I’ve had the pleasure of learning the raw humanness of. End of.

This book demands to be read. Need need needs to be read. By everyone everywhere.

Beautiful book, it was already one of my favorites but, the second time reading it I enjoyed it so much more, the characters are enchanting, and while extremely flawed, I can’t help but root for them and falling in love with every single one.

This story really shows that being human means we’re flawed, but we are so much more than those flaws.
