really enjoyed and was immersed in the story of the families rather than the fire that will happen but the little hints of wonder what will cause things to star. the parallels from june to nina or mick’s childhood ending in a fire being a parallel to Nina deciding to break her agreeablity.

WOW
Mick Riva FUCK YOU!!!!!

4 solid stars

Real talk. I didn’t like Evelyn Hugo or Daisy Jones so I fully expected to not like this. It wasn’t even the stories or the content I didn’t like I just felt for both books TJR was a bit wordy and the books 100 pages too long. I got bored and ended up skimming the last 1/3 of each book.

But I actually really liked this book. Maybe it was the setting. I love books set in California and about the rich and famous. I also love books set back the time this was. Maybe it was the 4 kids. I’m not sure exactly what it was for me about this book but I was all in. I did love Nina and related to her throughout the book. And I loved reading about the 4 siblings and their flaws. I was so very sad for them when it came to June, her undoing after Mick left, and finally her horrible death. This was a family drama I enjoyed and am glad I got to spend time with the Riva family.

Not her typical way of writing, but I enjoyed it!
However, I will state for the record that the brother storyline was not it. I’d be piiiiiiiiiiissed.

I'm just overall lost with where exactly this plot was going, pretty disappointed since TJR is one of my favorites

Now I can't say I LOVE all of TJR's other works but I do enjoy them and think they're solid 3.5/4 star books, but this one...this one felt like a book rushed to publication to ride on the coattails of the others' successes. I have the same complaints most others have that gave it a similar rating - the pacing is off, the extra characters that served no purpose, the lack of emotional connection with the characters, and the filler chunks that could've been eliminated. I felt like I was turning page after page and never getting anywhere this one. As well, I didn't feel a bond with any of the characters, they all got on my nerves to some extent. Oh well, this doesn't turn me off from TJR, I will still pick up new reads from her, you can't win all the time.

To be honest, it took me a while to get into this book. Up until about 80% I kept asking, what is the plot? I was sure I was going to rate this a 3⭐️ but then it all came together. This book is about family, the highs and lows and all the dynamics within.
