Raw, unfiltered honesty that is at once poignant and physically revolting. If art is supposed to make you feel something, this definitely qualifies insofar as it gave me many full body cringes. I almost quit in the first quarter, but I’m glad I stuck it out. It’s a profound commentary on womanhood, motherhood, middle age, and kind of just existing in relation to others. Going to have to sit with this one for a while. Truly a wild, unbelievably graphic ride (that I think I enjoyed?) but not one I’ll be reaching for to reread any time soon.

really wormed its way into my brain, this one. i wasn't sure how much i was enjoying it until quite far into the monrovia section, but something really slid into place and i felt like i Got it.
reaching a point in life like this where you feel stuck and then look back and think "shit, have i been trapped for over a decade" is terrifying, probably fairly common and treated with so little compassion. the negative responses to this i've seen often complain about the unnamed protagonist's decision-making being irrational, which feels like a pretty spectacular example of missing the point. good book!

Not for me. It was too sexual and I felt like I was in a fever dream most of the time. It just didn’t hit for me. There were a few moments I enjoyed but overall it just wasn’t my type of book.
