Incredible book!!!!! Super engaging and thought provoking. Love the critique of true crime but simultaneous fascination with it, it felt very human. Some very dark themes but will definitely reread! Really liked the conversations around fan communities

i really liked this one! part of me wishes it was not read during exam season but it is also the only thing that has kept me sane(ish) so i have to be thankful! the speculative aspect of the book in it's entirety is something i found really interesting and i REALLY enjoyed the messaging and commentary it does on the real world - i find it particularly interesting and especially well delivered. this is almost definitely a book that is going to haunt me for a while but for all the best reasons, most definitely a read i would recommend!

viscerally dragged me back to the experience of being 15/16 in 2016. I've never seen the unique horror of online fandom portrayed so well - dark and pathetic and funny and overwhelming. The frame narrative and multimedia aspects really dig into the tangle of truth and perspective and projection and entertainment - after all, was I not 'entertained' by 'Alec Z. Carelli's' fictional presentation of 'emotional truth'? Did I not laugh reading Dolly's cringey creeker fanfiction? Did I not feel like I shouldn't be reading the horrific description of Joni's death at the opening of the novel - and then read it anyway?

A brilliant and uniquely written novel about Fandom behavior towards true crime by youth and adults. This connects with the reader very well as I didn't know about the fake nonfiction aspect of the book from the blurb and before starting it so, the draw for me to read it was the crime story. The reader feels called out by the book, and along with the well written story within the story is, intrigued to see what Clark has to say. It uses fiction in a brilliant way to display how people socially interact with crime. When in the middle of the book I thought I wouldn't be able to reccomend this book to older audiences as a lot of the nuances of modern teen life aren't explained but the excellent final chapter of a fake guardian interview with the books fake author changed that and brought this book to a 5.

As someone who was a young girl on Tumblr in 2012 and in middle/high school in the 2010s, much of this book is familiar to me because of the online spaces I was tangential to at those times. Also, as a person who consumed true crime via podcasts and documentaries recently, this book has changed the way I consume true crime. This book has been eye-opening and really made me reflect on my own consumption of true crime as well as how our society engages with what is now an industry that profits off of retelling the oftentimes unsanctioned stories of peoples' real and very personal tragedies. I would recommend this book to everyone I know.
