After LOVING the Netflix movie, I wanted to see how the original comic compared. While it's got all the same vibes, and same general outcome, they're clearly two different media. But in a good way. I loved the movie for all it's jokes and messages about mental health and how the folks in charge don't always have our best interests at heart; and the comic had very similar vibes too, but it's clear characters and characterizations were changed quite a bit from the original in the adaptation from the original web comic, but thankfully, done in a way that captured the essence of those characters and made them just as loveable and enjoyable in either format.

Really enjoyable read, got through it really quickly. My only complaint is I was surprised when it ended- I’d been hoping for more!

Cute story, a little darker than what the art implies but still a nice light read. Seems like a good story for middle schoolers. Nimona is a little gremlim at times. Her dynamic with her boss Ballister is heartwarming and quite sweet.

I read this after watching the movie and wow! Two very different stories with the same characters. (Makes me wonder about the web comic…) This doesn’t take itself too seriously but still has serious moments. Very goofy and very enjoyable!! The concept itself is so very interesting. Mixing the classic fantasy figures of knights and monsters with science and technology. I wish that dichotomy had been explored a bit more. It would have been very fun to see how else they mix!

I loved this. I knew I’d like it, but I didn’t know I’d love it as much as I did. Stevenson has created something that’s darkly insightful while also being a quirky, self-aware, and sometimes cute adventure. The artwork is excellent and is a wonderful example of how personality is the single most important thing a comic’s visuals can have. Character designs are flawless—satirically aware of their tropes, yet zany enough to feel distinct—and the visual gags, character expressions, and general texture of the book are a constant delight. There could’ve been 1,000 pages here, and I still think I’d want more at the end.

That said, I confess to being slightly let down by the ending, specifically its suddenness and the way it sidesteps some of the repercussions the climax undoubtedly leaves in its wake. I love ambiguity, but for a story that’s so smart with its subversions and commentary, leaving so much of the ending untold felt a touch out-of-character for the book. But that’s ultimately a minor bump in what was otherwise a gleeful adventure with a huge heart and far sharper, toothier thematic work than I expected—in the plot, anyway, as I did find myself wanting a little more from Ambrosius.

It’s still a total winner, though, and I can see myself revisiting it often whenever I need a properly zany, funny, and strikingly poignant fantasy romp. If there were any justice in the world, they would teach this in schools.

My only note is that Stevenson should not have included skin-walkers, since Native folks have been pretty adamant that they don't want non-Natives using that lore.

Otherwise, I really enjoyed it!
