A very special book

I didn’t enjoy the narrator of the audiobook and found the switching back and forth in the timeline confusing. Reading reviews I see many people had a similar issue. Unfortunately the audiobook began by listing the trigger warnings which gave away what the whole mystery was. I might have been more interested had the story not been spoiled that way.

Mind the Trigger Warnings

Rep: Native Indigenous, Two Spirit

Thoughts: Feeling lots of pain because of the heavy reality. A definite must read.

DNF at about halfway. I don't think it's this book's fault that I didn't finish it—I think I would just rather read a nonfiction book on the subject of missing and murdered indigenous women rather than a fictional YA one. So no rating from me, because I don't think that this book is less valuable or anything than other media in this subject—I'm sure this is just right for lots of people—it's just not the one I was after.

Had potential but the time skips were too jarring and muddled the flow of the story.

So much unexplored potential here.
Under developed plot. The highlight was the story within the story - Interwoven mythology/storytelling. This wasn’t the page turner it could have been; finished because I’m no quitter.

anna is a darling! this is a fictional story based on the very real crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous People. it captures, with immense tenderness, the terrors of colonization and racism that are far reaching and ongoing

i enjoyed how the story is structured and unfolds non-linearly; for me that helped to build the suspense (will they find her in time) and time to bond with characters because the mystery is not all that mysterious. i liked how this story tackles issues of gender identity, racism, and the not so clear to see impacts of ongoing colonization.

As a kind of murder mystery, this book is perfectly average. Did the overall description and characterization of a made-up indigenous nation feel slightly off to me, so I looked it up & found out a white man from Illinois wrote this? Yes.
