Usually a huge fan of indigenous horror but the other reviews definitely highlight that this feels more like a contemporary fiction than mystery/thriller to me. I heard the ending goes crazy but 50% of the way in and it’s all set up and ambiance.
3.5 stars ⭐️ this was a great book, and also a very important story to tell and one that was handled well. I’m just taking points off for certain things that bugged me (The dual timeline, some corny dialogue/monologues, and high school stuff, the quick ending after such a long buildup). I’d recommend this to anyone tho!

This turned out a bit different than the blurb and opening led me to believe. It promised horror with mythological elements, but the mythical/supernatural elements were a lot more metaphorical than the opening hinted at. It was almost like the book forgot about them at times. The real horror here was the very real nightmare of indigenous women/girls disappearing at an alarming rate. I think the book balanced this real world problem well. I also enjoyed the exploration of Anna as Two Spirited, and think that was weaved and seeded into the narrative a lot better than any horror elements. I would have liked more mythological elements too, but also appreciated the author's note where Medina points out the different tribes stories that he used to inspire the stories used by the tribe in the book. It wasn't the atmosphere/vibe I was expecting but it was a good enough read anyway. You just have to concentrate when reading because not only does the book jump in time between different days, but also at different hours in those days, so I had to keep flipping to the contents page to check where in the timeline each chapter was.
