This was disappointing to fine. The structure made no sense and I think it actually made it lose tension than gain it. No idea why this was labeled as horror. Yes what happens here is horrible but I wouldn't deem it a horror book per se. By the end of the book I could definitely tell this book was written by a man because it was giving very male gaze-y.
My other quibbles are all spoiler worthy so I will note it accordingly: Nothing came of the head, which was such a weird choice. Like why even add that element if you're not going to fully engage with it? Also, so much of the narrative is glaringly obvious and I kept waiting for...more. Within the first few pages I knew that the protag was probably two-spirit. But the way Medina dolled out that revelation bit by bit was so odd. It felt very, "cis people-- are you ready?!" Like we needed to be prepped. Also, the way it was presented as this big revelation that she's two-spirit...it just didn't make sense. This is a character who's OBSESSED with story and folklore...and you're trying to tell me she never came across stories about two-spirit folks and never thought, "huh, that resonates with me"?! It's just not working. Also, the reveal of what happened to Grace was the most straightforward turn of events that anyone could see coming. While devastating and sad, there was nothing really well written here. Again the fact that the head had nothing to do with anything really feels like a missed opportunity. Lastly, the ending was hella rushed.
Still on the search for a great indigenous horror novel.
