If you like creepy forests, grumpy wizards, and female characters who are just a general hot mess, then you should totally read this.

I expected something very different out of this book when I decided to pick it up, but what I ended up getting was so much better. This book is perfect for fans of Howl’s Moving Castle who wish it was tailored more for adults.

An interesting idea ruined by SA that isn’t properly addressed and uncomfortably told in first person perspective. I wanted to love this book. I was pleased that some things were addressed like the messiness, but that still doesn’t explain her using the dress she is wearing to clean sick off the floor. Or why she finds a note left by a former resident in chapter one and doesn’t think to look for others. It was a struggle to watch her, hard to like the wizard, and most characters you meet are thoroughly unlikable.

I have so many thoughts that I’m just not even sure how to explain. None of the reviews I’d read back when I bought this book several years ago had trigger warnings or I’d probably never had bought or read this.

Also my brain still is trying to figure out what her laughter spilling into his mouth making stutters of kisses would look like. But it’s kind of cursed sounding.

I found the plot to move in leaps and starts, not unmanageable but noticeable. There were times I felt important parts of conversations weren’t had, and I would’ve loved some breathing room to understand the depth of the relationships better, especially the one between Agniezka and the dragon. With Kasia it was established they had years before the book to be childhood friends, but I would have liked to see the development more.

I thought that the ending and the allegory was sweet and hopeful. Considering how dark things got to lead to that point, it felt like a gentle ending that was earned. It made sense and I was satisfied knowing how things got to where they did. I liked how many of the relationships were hard to interpret. There were a lot of conflicting interests and I enjoyed not knowing. The shallow nature of the court proceedings opposed to the people just trying to get by. Overall enjoyed this a lot.

Overall, subpar. The magic and world building are far more interesting than any of the characters could ever dream of being, which is a shame because we don't get to see much of it. The premise was interesting, the plot was an actual plot, but it could have been fleshed out so much better if it only had a bit more time. The ending was a semi-refreshing subversion of the expected romance ending, but it felt a bit rushed. The romance part itself was, in my opinion, wholly unnecessary and a bit unpleasant. The main romantic interest is an immortal while our mc is... 17-ish. Not to mention the attempted rape scene.

Overall very fun. Don't expect well rounded characters or character development. Classic fairytale vibe. Was very frustrated with our main character it often felt like she was a Mary Sue but for the most part it worked. The plot was very strong and the ending was super inviting. Highly recommend as a fun read. I really think I'll enjoy it even more on a second read now that I know what to expect.

I intentionally read this book after her other book Spinning Silver because I thought I would like this one a bit more, but I actually think I like Spinning Silver more. I still loved this book though-- the imagery was great, the characters were interesting, and it had a very fairytale-like feel which I adore.
