This would qualify as a slow build. Great attention is paid to character development and creating a sense of atmosphere.  High stakes are established and reestablished with an increasing sense of urgency as you progress through the story.  There is a great combination of fantastical and action-adventure elements employed throughout the book and you find yourself rooting for the main characters.  Would definitely recommend.

This one took me a minute to get through. Not because I didn’t enjoy it, but because I am mood read. While this story was very beautiful, it just didn’t click with me like I wanted it to. It was a me problem though. The characters are unique and wonderful. The world-building and overall plot are incredibly unique and captivating. The romance is very much a subplot, but the development of the relationship is so well done. I am only knocking a star because for me 5 stars are a must-read, and I don’t see myself reaching back for this one. Although I do recommend giving it a shot.

THIS WAS AMAZING. I listened to the audiobook and it wasn't the best narrator I've ever heard so I want to experience this story again by actually reading it. But really this was so good.

Will review at a later date, think this is my favourite book of the year. Love the grumpy, well kept wizard and the wild at heart, disheveled witch. Fast-paced, action packed and kept me wanting to pick it back up.

A beautiful story filled with colorful imagery and powerful emotions, Uprooted will keep you hooked from start to finish. Employing an almost poetically enchanting magic system and absolutely gorgeous prose, Novik applies her masterful talent for characterization and page-turning plot devices to enrapture the reader and plow through a harrowing tale of desperation, growth, and destiny. Agnieszka is wonderfully complex; a mix of boldness, recklessness, empathy, and compassion, she will steal your heart and bewitch your senses with her unique magic and raw emotion.
A powerful tale of the power of perspective and the sheer determination that love and compassion can kindle, Uprooted has all of the nostalgia of fairytales and all of the grit of modern YA.
