History was one of my least favorite subjects in school, so the fact that I read this huge book and rated it a "really liked it" 4 stars says how good it really is. It is certainly not a quick read, but most of it was very enjoyable and I learned a ton. The question is how much I remember....
Highly recommended to anyone who is interested in this period and not afraid of a giant non-fiction book!

Pretty incredible span of history that is both detailed and generalized at the same time. Glad to have finally read it.
As is the case with other volumes in the Oxford History of the United States series, this is an excellent overview of its time period--namely the Great Depression, the New Deal, and World War II--that is both comprehensive and readable. Kennedy treats partisan issues surrounding government involvement with a judicious hand and his descriptions of battles narrate the war as a larger arc interspersed with delightful details. Highly recommended for any teachers or students of the era.

It took me nearly five months, but I’ve finally finished this behemoth - and what a read! This is a must for anyone who has any interest in understanding the economic and socio-political foundations of our world today. You already learned all there is to know about the Great Depression and WWII in high school, you say? To quote the undisputed champion of 20th Century reality television, “You think you know, but you have no idea.” READ IT.
