A captivating book about a general and revolutionary that should always be mentioned when someone brings up how 'amazing' Napoleon was. Though he never saved France as Belisarius saved the Eastern Roman Empire, he should be sung of just as much.
The book is written well too, you can definitely feel how the author was won over by this historical figure, and the book ends appropriately advocating for the General Dumas, as we all should.

Incredibly cool story that started out keeping my full attention, but lost me for quite a bit in the middle. I really wanted more of a focus on Dumas, The Black Count, but got more of a history of the French Revolution instead. Still enjoyed it, but not really what I expected.

thoroughly enjoyed this. the writing I'd accessible and also gives great context for the time period. it is remarkably well-researched and also manages to be funny.

If you like a biography you will like this book. If you like little known characters in history who should be more well known then you will like this book.
This book is about Alex Dumas, the father of the novelist Alexandre Dumas. The Count of Monte Christo is inspired by the real life adventures of the author's father. The son of slaves in Haiti who become a leading figure throughout the French revolution.
Fascinating life and story.

A fascinating narrative of a dynamic moment in history through the life of a unique individual. Great piece of narrative history and I gained a lot of perspective on the dynamics of the French Revolution, which was surprising because that’s a subject I’d studied quite significantly as part of my formal education.
