Good story, knowing the musical a little. It was nice to hear the full story, but don't think I'd care enough to listen to the rest of the series

A fun, quick read. Very simple plot. A good book for young readers, though not enough depth for an older audience to appreciate it.

Slightly different from the film as its longer and it takes Dorothy a little while longer to get home, the wicked witch of the west doesn't really play a huge part in this and it seems a little more 'violent' in parts but doesn't read like it's horrifying, just matter of fact, especially how the Tin Man became the Tin Man.
Overall, I really enjoyed it and it's a very quick read, didn't start it until earlier today and went through it quite quickly. I will read the other 13 stories as I have the complete collection.

When I was in middle school, I decided to read the book that my favorite movie of all time was based on. I read it, I hated it, and I never thought about it again.
In the years since, I've done a lot more research about L. Frank Baum's life, and the circumstances around his writing the Oz books, and last year, while in Traverse City at my favorite bookshop in existence, I found the Penguin Classics Chalk Editions display and couldn't resist picking up my favorite cover designs. I got home, set them aside, and dove into other literary pursuits. But yesterday, I decided I wanted something light and fairy-tale like, and nostalgic, so I picked up Wizard of Oz and devoured it in practically a single sitting.
With my years of perspective, I found the vignette-style chapters much easier to swallow, and was delighted to find that the book was not the odd, unreadable mess I remembered it being. Baum has a remarkable way of writing, and it feels like a beloved uncle or grandfather is telling you a story before bedtime, with just enough adventure to keep your interest, but not enough danger to make it really scary. In fact, now that I've finished the first book, I'm highly interested in reading the rest of Baum's Oz books.
