3 1/2 Stars. The greatest characteristic of this play is its ability to produce a surplus of questions for the reader/audience. What is goodness? Can an individual be good in a capitalistic society? What does it mean to be truly helpful? Are current religions truly helping our society? Is there any way Shen Te could get a happy ending?

Brecht masterfully challenges each reader to find the answer to these questions for themselves.
