absolutely INSANE daddy-issues horror. i enjoyed it more than i thought i would after nestlings. this book was terribly sad as all effective horror is. more original than i expected and very meaningful, plus the substance-like body horror.

i wasn't the biggest fan of the ending though, it reminds me of that newer episode of black mirror where the girl gains the same powers as her enemy and immediately becomes corrupt

Another banger from Nat Cassidy! He has a real talent for weaving our darkest fears and deepest truths into a wild and unpredictable narrative.
These characters are absolutely lovable, and to see them going through such horrors will make your heart ache. You will end up with a better understanding of them but also maybe of your own fears as well.

I am rendered nearly speechless. How this exceeded my expectations is beyond me. This easily passed my love for Nestlings, and that was an easy 5 star read for me. This makes Nestlings feel like a 4. When I finished this, I wanted to put my head through my device and scream. It could have ended where it did, and I was speechless. But to go that extra step in the final part? WTF Cassidy?! That was clever. I can’t believe I missed that, and I’m a bit of a queen at digging that stuff out.

“Is love enough of a reason to keep doing stupid things?” … is love enough to make you miss those little, impactful, sincere things? Yep. Yep. Yep.

I feel for any person who has felt this was about a parent or a person they loved and trusted as a caregiver.

This was horror and magically dark.

MILD SPOILER

Overall, I have mixed feelings about this book. Most of the time it was simply entertaining/fun and predicable, until Chapter 53. This is where the book I was expecting from Cassidy finally materialized. I had all the feels. I wish the whole book had the same level of emotional intensity as the last few chapters and the Afterward. I would’ve only rated this at a 3.5 if the mood hadn’t changed at the end.
