I have loved all of the other novels in this series. Unfortunately I just liked this one. While the premise of the mystery was good the conclusion seemed rushed and a little out there.
Also there were too many things going on with our regulars. Claire's blackslide with drugs, the problems with the police dept and the issues with Kevin and Hadley maed it seem that the author was trying to cram so much into one book because we waited 6 years for it.
That being said I do look forward to the next installment in this series.
I received a copy of this book from Netgalley for my honest review.

I’ve missed this series. This one was well worth waiting for. An excellent plot, a continuation of Russ and Clare's relationship, and how their jobs both clash and mesh. Good growth of some the other characters as well, and a set-up for the next book.
I love Julia Spencer-Fleming's books and have read them all. I feel I know these characters so well. I'm sorry to hear of all her losses in the past few years and I'm grateful she's still writing. Looking forward to her next one!
Clare and Russ are back and their lives are as smooth as ever...which is to say not very. What I like about this series is that Spencer-Fleming doesn't think her characters are perfect--they have flaws and are all-too-human. This book is more Russ's story than Clare's as it flips back and forth in time and deals with the ongoing fight to "Save Our Police" in Millers Kill. I felt that the mystery was much darker than usual, but it was the characters that really engaged me in this outing. Of course, there are plenty of loose ends that need to be tied up in the next book.......

Thoroughly enjoyable "whodunnit" in the Reverend Clare/Chief Russ series. I've been desperately waiting for this one, Big things happening for this one - Clare and Russ are new parents, and Clare is juggling her new sobriety. In the meantime a dead woman lands in the middle of a road in their police district in a crime that mirrors two other crimes, one in the 1950s and another in the 1970's that Russ was a suspect in. Meanwhile there's a vote on the ballot to disband the Miller's Kill department to save money, and Clare has a new intern. who's wealthy family may drum up support.
There was a lot going on in this one - and it bounces around across years and generations, but it was well handled. I loved getting to know the Chief before Russ, Jack, and see a hint of something with Russ' mom as well.
Above all - it seems this one ends with a cliff hanger so I'm hopeful for the next one to come! I understand the other had a painful several years of loss. I'm selfishly glad she's come back to us with this installment, and wish her all the best.
I read this thanks to Netgally, the author, and St. Martin's Press- Minotaur Books. Thanks! All opinions are my own and are as unbiased as possible.

Really bad, huge waste of my time.
I was drawn in by the gorgeous cover and intriguing title (despite it not being grammatically correct—I figured I'd keep an open mind, artistic license and all that). I love a good mystery / police-procedural and small town? Even better.
Wrong.
The book was poorly written, implausible and had continuity issues. It was also extremely dull and very drawn out.
Save yourself and find another.
2 stars, because I've seen worse, but very much disliked it.

Audio:
The narrator actually did a pretty good job, no complaints there. The production itself was a little patchy at times, hopefully the author got a discount or something for this.

I had a feeling my world view had changed enough since I originally read the series that it might no longer be for me and I was right. I borrowed it from the library and I just no longer enjoy the support our dedicated local police type books as much anymore. It was also fairly easy to figure out.
I like these stories better when there is more interaction between Clare and Russ.
