I really enjoyed this murder/mystery. I did not realize it was a series until after I finished. Now I think I am going to have to go back and read the other books. I liked the characters. None of them were perfect people. Even the Reverend had her faults. That just made them more likable. I had no idea the outcome of the mystery until the end. It was a real twist. I am anxious for more of this series. I received a copy from Netgalley for my honest opinion. I would recommend this book.

Fans had to wait six years for this book due to health issues in the author's family, but the wait was worth it! We see Russ and Clare as parents juggling work and child care, and also at their respective jobs as police chief and Episcopal priest.

The story covers murders that happen in 1952, 1972, and present day. While I was suspicious of who committed the murders, I didn't know why, so I was still interested in finishing the book.

Woven in with the three murders and work/home life for Russ and Clare is underlying tension about a ballot referendum on maintaining the Millers Kill police department or eliminating it and turning public safety duties over to the New York State Police.

I highly recommend this book. My only complaint about it is that the term "unsub" was used numerous times; I couldn't figure out exactly what it means and if it was explained in the book, I missed it. However, that minor annoyance didn't keep me from enjoying the book. I only hope we don't have to wait six years for the next one!

I admit that I'm late to the game where this series is concerned, but I didn't feel too slighted in terms of figuring out the characters. I suppose I would've had a little more context as to why the characters acted in a certain way or did certain things, but I saw no reason that this book couldn't stand alone. So, I'm not sure if the other books in the series are the same, but this one seemed awfully busy to me. It wasn't so much the mystery - I really liked the premise of that, and the outcome was interesting. Not believable, but interesting. It was everything else that was so busy, as in the personal lives of our main characters. There was so much drama with Clare that it distracted from the mystery. In the end, the story was okay, but it wasn't enough to make me want to explore the earlier books in the series.

Love this series!

And this great mystery series rolls on! I’m on tenterhooks already, wanting to know how Clare and Russ and MKPD will go on!
dark mysterious

So I know this is the 9th book in the series, but it's my first. I love the idea of a Reverend and a Chief of police being married. I think they are a great team and I would love to go check out the first 8 books to see what happened in their life before this book. I know they were involved in a scandal and that Clare is an alcoholic.

This book was really good. 3 murders spaced over 54 years and they all are so similar! Who wouldn't want to read about that? There's also small town politics and a lot of other drama in here that makes for a good read. It breaks into 1952, 1972 and current day but it's very easy to keep up and understand. Of course, there's a cliffhanger involving 2 cops and I'm sure Russ gets involved. Very intriguing!
