Loved the premise! Aliens came to earth and essentially leave their garbage over 6 different locations/zones. Only to leave as quickly as they arrive. It's commonly referred as  "the visitation" and that's all we really learn about it. The aliens didn't care to make contact, they just stopped for a "roadside picnic".

The story follows Redrick Schuhart a "stalker" that breaks into these zones to steal alien artifacts to sell.

Reaaally interesting read for any fans of post-apocalyptic/fallout fiction. The characters are very funny in a Russian noir kind of way. The main character is between 20 and 30 during the book but he is written like a grumpy, grizzled 80 year old (which kinda rules).

Picnic by the Roadside, or better known to our generation as Stalker, is a book that undoubtedly deserves its place among the most acclaimed science fiction literature. The story around the Belt, which alternates between narrative er and ich forms, is an absolutely essential work of science fiction for future writers and game designers alike. The mystery-soaked area envelops the reader and the main characters, and by the end you're left with a head full of impressions and thoughts, and most importantly, a bunch of questions that everyone has to answer for themselves.

Very thought provoking concept and great atmosphere. LOVE the ending. Characters are a bit flat, and I wish the character development in the last section that led to the conclusion was more present in the earlier parts of the book.

solid read, wanted more in depth on what was going on, but this follows just 1 person experience, which i guess is why the book is like how it is, i liked it

A somewhat challenging story told from several characters points of view about the apparent appearance and sudden disappearance of aliens. The stories meander through a variety of situations, sometimes lingering and luxuriating for a long time, while unfolding back story and the protagonists theories on what it all means. Mostly enjoyable and splendidly written, a must for fans of the genre.
