I could tell the goal from the beginning, although I would never have guessed how he did the middle. I thought it was really cool.
It did feel like reading multiple books, which had its pros and cons for me, but I can't get into that without revealing too much of the book.
In my opinion, there were some really beautiful elements to the story.

This was a goddamn tour de force. I'm very familiar with Hosseini's style from A Thousand Splendid Suns and, of course The Kite Runner, which is one of two main books my honors thesis in college centered on. I've read his words hundreds of times, disproportionate to the amount of books he's written. Partially this is because of the thesis, but The Kite Runner is also just an utter masterclass in storytelling. Hosseini's rich, deep understanding of narrative texture and the overall structure of how to impose a theme onto a deliberate, stark framework of human cultural understanding is unbeaten to me. It's not the moment to moment prose that always gets me in the end, though that is sprawling, breathtaking, and gorgeous, but the way the narrative snakes through this long, sad field of human experience, irony, what it means to tell stories and make art, and how ones' legacy hinges on that--the material effects we put on the world, whether or not they are remembered by who they were meant for--and not necessarily just bloodlines. It's amazing.
The book drops in catch after Pari's section because I just found her story SO interesting, and afterwards we get kind of a boring story that barely attaches to the main circumstance of plot, but it quickly recovers and delivers a heartbreaking, masterful stroke of a finish. Incredible work.

A beautifully written and insightful novel. Hosseini has the unique ability to let you see how our lives interconnect like the silky strings of a web. Aware of how fragile the web appears, he delicately lifts each individual string to give readers closer inspection. And he, like us, seems surprised at how strong and resilient those individual strings can be and what beauty they create when they intersect.

Khaleid Hosseini is one of my favorite authors of all time, but this book was a miss for me. While the book was...
