2020 review:

I feel like I don't have the right words to express how I felt about this book. Reading it was a very immersive experience. At times it broke my heart, reading about how the men around her treated Celie, but it could also be uplifting and heartwarming. The Color Purple really explored the relationships between women, familiar love, friendship, romantic and sexual love, and it did it with such grace and realness.

I'm hoping to watch the movie adaption by Steven Spielberg soon, and while I can't see how this will translate well to film, I know there are some amazing actresses in it and I can't wait to see their performances.

I cannot believe I hadn't read this before. A little annoyed at my high school for not assigning it, particularly given that I went to high school (and grew up) where Alice Walker was born. :-/

Anyway, this was GREAT. At first, I wasn't sure about the letter format of the book, but it pulled me in. Celie is an incredibly well-drawn character, someone who I feel like I want to know. What's incredible is that ALL the characters are so well-drawn, even ones that we barely know (i.e., Mary Agnes, Henrietta, Eleanor Jane) and ones that we're set up to hate (Mr. _______). Celie's journey through life, journey into finding her power, her voice, her SELF, and God... all of it... it's fantastic.

All I can really do is sing this book's praises. I loved it.

Dear God, Celie, Nettie & Shug

I LOVED THIS BOOK!!! If a person thinks “I’ve seen the film, I don’t need to read the book” about this novel they are definitely wrong!!!

I grew up watching The Color Purple (and have always loved it and named my car after Celie) but the thought of reading the book never crossed my mind!! This book deserves so much more attention and admiration!

Heartbreaking. Loving. Hopeful.

For what it’s worth, this was my favorite read of 2023. Perfect book, no notes.
