Part of my "Little House" re-read.
I think this was a 4 star book the first time reading it and the writing is much better than the earlier books but I'm knocking it down to 3 stars because I forgot how much (or little) time she actually spent on Mary going blind. You're freaking sister goes blind and you spend about 2 pages in the entire book on it?! Seems like that would've been a big deal, that you might want to devote some pages to how that affected you, your sister, your family.
Still highly recommended if only for the historical significance this series had on literature.

Boy, these just get better and better. When I think back to Little House in the Big Woods and what a comparative slog that was--so many recipes/instructions/directions and such little character and plot--how far this series has come. Perhaps because her namesake is older, and the author remembers the events more clearly, the later books are 100 times more compelling.
I'm 53, and fairly well-educated (Masters' degree, lots of reading, etc.) but this charming children's book series has so vividly brought the settlement and expansion to life for me. I daresay if I were recommending the series I'd suggest starting with the book just before this (On the Banks of Plum Creek) and then reading in sequence, only returning to the earliest ones if you were highly motivated to complete. I'd assumed, because it gave its name to the TV series, that Little House on the Prairie was the jewel in the collection, but not so.
(Note: 5 stars = amazing, wonderful, 4 = very good book, 3 = decent read, 2 = disappointing, 1 = awful, just awful. I'm fairly good at picking for myself so end up with a lot of 4s).
