A solid 4.5 for me! I love coming of age memoirs and this one hit me in all the feels. So beautifully sorrowful at points, I often found myself holding my breath when the mood in the house began to turn. I learnt so much about the diversity within Rastafarianism too, I never realised how little I knew about this culture.

Perfect. no notes. an exploration of rastafarianism, patriarchy and women's struggles to make themselves versus men's desires to make(control) them

As a Jamaican woman, I learned so much about Rastafarianism and the overall history of the island. I loved the story overall and was moved by Safiya's mother, aunt Audrey and her siblings.

The writing style was hard for me to get through which impacted my review. While I loved the story overall, some parts were too overwritten for me and made it hard to really dive into. I found myself rereading sections more than usual after zoning out at times. Glad I stuck with it.

This was a beautifully written memoir. The prose was so lyrical and beautiful. I look forward to reading more work by this poet.
