omg. just omg. 4.5 stars. this was AMAZING!!

i stayed up past 3 AM just to finish this book. ok, ngl, the beginning had me confused (a circus?? the FMC's backstory? the MMC agreeing to the marriage?) and required a bit of suspension of belief. however, once you got over that, this was such a phenomenal read.

the animals were the highlight of this book. coming into this book, i didn't think i'd care for the circus setting, but the bond that daisy had with the animals was so touching. i found myself enjoying these chapters the most.

i loved daisy. one of my favorite FMCs. i wish she had been a bit more flawed, but i feel like her sweetness/naivety was at times a flaw when she was surrounded by such hardened individuals. she deserved so much better than the MMC, and i want her to be so happy. she was seriously neglected by every single human in her life growing up.

the MMC kinda sucked in this. i could tell he really loved her by the end, because we got to see his point of view at times. however, he still didn't take full accountability and i didn't like that he had to strong hand her into coming back with him. tbh this book is from a few decades ago, so i get that things have changed a lot and readers want more than just toxic masculinity, but he was pretty awful until like 80% of the way in. I WISH THE GROVEL WAS LONGER!! this would've made the entire book perfect. she takes him back too quickly. i did like that the fmc actually made a decision and stuck to it at the end, but i hated that she felt that she had to 'prove herself' to the MMC throughout the book. it makes sense, because he had so many misconstrued expectations of her.. however, it sucked that she had to go through hard labor, accusations, bullying from others, etc to earn his respect.

the sexual chemistry was a bit lacking in this, but i was reading for the romance, so idc. would definitely recommend this book.

DNF 55%. I really hated the love interest and I don’t think I’m supposed to hate him. Maybe find him annoying I guess but I really did not like how he treated Daisy and it certainly didn’t help that I absolutely adored her. She was great and I seriously only kept reading because of her. But he treated her like crap and looked down on her and thought she was weak simply because of how she acted and was brought up. He was domineering and abusive and just downright mean and then chalked it up to “I had a bad childhood”. You know, she did too and she didn’t turn out a pathetic asshole, right? I only got this far in the book because I loved Daisy and I loved her character development and how STRONG she was. What a queen. Sorry for my rant I just really loathed this guy
