Booktok made me do it. Read this for the smut and it delivered. Fair warning it is a why choose? x step-siblings. Just so you know what you’re getting into.

As the title suggests it has themes from Cinderella rich girl, evil step mom, dead dad, step-siblings (morally grey brothers, instead of evil step-sisters). But it was definitely a secondary storyline to the smut lol

Definitely matches the blurb's promise of a darker Cinderella retelling with why choose trope. Our FMC is introduced to new stepmom and four stepbrothers out of the blue one day five years after her mom died and it's seen very quickly that stepmom fits "evil stepmom" category. The four MMC's are all obsessed w/ Ember right away (having cyber stalked her for past six months). Ember herself, has insta-lust for each of them which then very quickly becomes insta-love. Likewise, from the four boys as well.

Following the Cinderella mold, things suddenly get worse after tragedy and stepmom drops the fake niceties. Bringing in the "dark" portion of the story is what the stepmom makes the boys do for her to gain income and then what she has done to Ember.

My thoughts - Wasn't bad wasn't great. There wasn't a giant plot, and we didn't meet any characters outside of those from the household so was a very quick read.

I did like that the boys (besides the twins ofc) have been with each other physically and how much they took care of each other and then Ember. Their protectiveness of her was a big plus for me.

Overall, it was a quick read with not a lot of development but that's kind of what I expected going in for a retelling novella.

Rating this mid at 3 because I am so confused idk what to rate it. Did I want to put it down? No, but not like because I was so super into it. Did I hate it? No, I can get it...this FMC had a rough life and was very neglected by her dad once her mom died. So the insta-love part makes sense for someone in the mindset I imagined her to be in. The male characters insta-love was probably trauma based too for some of it but like they seemed to be smitten even prior to meeting her although she didn't seem like the type to have a strong online presence, she seemed like a withdrawn kinda artsy gal. Was it a wild insane ride, that leaves you utterly confused how or what the author was trying to do with it? Yes, I love dark romance so if this is supposed to be in that category then maybe that was why the choices of storyline was chosen. Idk, I just don't know what to think. The whole time reading it, I half figured she was going to wake up from a coma and all this crazy mess would be a dream she cooked in her head. Because some stuff didn't compute. Like how did they read her mind? How do you wake up with someone between your legs and just go with it after just meeting them? Gave me Satan's Affair vibes like for real...ignore this review because it's as crazy as this book was but if you wanna try it out then do it because maybe it's like those people who read sad books to get a good cry and you are the type to read a crazy book to get confused. :)

Audio Review:

This book is more character driven than plot driven. It’s also more spice than plot and is very much instalust/instalove, but I went into it already expecting that so it didn’t bother me.

All in all this audiobook kept me entertained while I was at work and I finished it in one shift. There are some dark parts so make sure to read the trigger warnings before starting so you know what you’re getting into. The narrators Evelyn Rose and Michael Gallagher did a great job bringing these characters and this book to life, and I especially enjoyed the appearances by Lucas Webley and Marcel Williams.
