3.5 Unusual book, in that you know the murderer’s identities from the very beginning. The question is how they covered it up so well and whether or not they’ll get away with it. And of course there’s more to it than just that. A good story, but I found the characters a bit lacking and the dialogue often didn’t seem real (which may have been the translation I suppose.) I’m glad I read it, but I probably won’t look for the author’s other books.

This one was a surprise: started off in a fairly pedestrian manner and ooooo so Japanese rigid structural framework both for the story and for the characters that seem so shallow. after the murder and the coverup the book kicks into another gear with the arrival of Yukawa the physicist and layers start peeling off Ishigami. Things get even more interesting with the arrival of the hopeful Kudo and even more of the characters are revealed. As it all falls apart the book hits a brilliant twist in the end. It started as a 3 star moves into 4star and ends on a higher note.

If you do not like Japanese movies don't bother. this book mimics the outward lack of personality in the characters, framed in stilted polite conversation and averted gazes, but the book's brilliance is how those shreds of conversation, those involuntary eye movements can betray such passion to sacrifice so much for so little in return.

The book had piqued my interest for some time, but it wasn't until the release of its Bollywood adaptation that I found myself eager to read it before watching the movie.

Although I haven't seen the film yet, I must emphasize that the book was truly fantastic. Dealing with the similar character names posed a bit of a challenge, but the overall experience was incredibly rewarding.

Once you start reading, it's nearly impossible to put the book down. If you're a fan of suspense thrillers, this is undoubtedly a must-read.
