Well I love Sherlock Holmes and strive to work towards being as observant as the character. That being said, this book was not my favorite so far. Many of the stories were slow and easy for me to deduce right away. I did decide to share this collection with my wife and son whom is a year and a half old. We would put him in his crib and I would read aloud to them both with different voices and all. We really enjoyed the family time even though my son doesn't understand the stories. He did enjoy laughing at my accent and different voices so it was worth it.
A few were great but my favorite was of course the Final problem. Even though it is a quick telling of certain events, that I won't mention in case I spoil the ending. It was very well written and you could feel the emotion in the story. My hat is off to Conan Doyle for this one. I do look forward to the next Holmes book on my list. Aside from Batman, Sherlock Holmes is one of my favorite detectives.

Another exhilarating collection of Sherlock Holmes short stories. We learn a little more about Sherlock Holmes's life before Watson and of course we have the sad "finale" on The Last Problem... a fitting end for a set of decidedly darker Sherlock Holmes stories.
I've had to skip around the series based on what's available when at the library (or at least, via the app). This is a strong collection and famous for The Final Problem. There's an interesting mix of cases, we see a more human side of Holmes and Watson is an eternal delight. I've always found the short stories more appealing than the novels.
Stephen Fry does a cracking job here, really developing his characters with some spot on regional accents and a touch of the dramatic. I've always found The Final Problem to be a little disconnected, with Moriarty coming from nowhere with little background or build up and with no actual mystery, just a rapid build up of suspense to the shock ending. However, Fry manages to pack so much emotion into the ending that it's quite heartbreaking. Even if you're a long time fan and have read these before (like me) it's well worth listening to his dramatic readings.
Good stuff.

Ok, this last short story "The Final Problem" in this book is more of the adventure/action-packed Sherlock that I enjoy. AND the 2nd movie with Robert Downey Jr. is definitely based on this short story with Moriarty, Switzerland, the waterfall, and the demise of Sherlock. That was fun to see the comparisons.
I also didn't realize The Hound of the Baskervilles was written after this one. Huh. Obviously, this wasn't the end of Sherlock as we thought!
