This book is best read when in middle school or with the intention to not think too critically about it.
For a dystopia, the world building is very underwhelming, and for a romance, both of Juliette’s love interests are like walking Red Flags (not to mention they are only in love with what she represents to them tbh).
However, I really enjoyed Juliette’s character and her development! She’s consistent in her personality and, in the face of literally everyone and their dog telling her what to do, she calculates all her options and uses her own judgement to make her choices. That’s rare for a female character! I found her sense of loyalty and trust issues to be incredibly consistent and relatable! Her POV really elevates this series.

Juliette is 17 years old and has been a prisoner, locked away from society for 3 years. It has been an eternity since Juliette experienced physical touch because within her roils a power that is dangerous to those around her. Just one touch from her can cripple a man. Just one touch can kill.

Everything about this story was astounding. From the pacing, to the plot, to the characterization, the character ARCS, the dialogue to the climax. I was put off from starting these asI was worried they wouldn’t live up to the hype but man, they totally felt worthy of all the praise I’ve seen. I was left gobsmacked, reeling, crying, and literally whiplashed from reading this book and it was SOOO worth it!

For a YA book series, there’s a significant amount of steam between certain characters and it was nice to read a YA with gritty undertones and that erred on the older age bracket of the YA spectrum, allowing for some more mature content to slip in.

Just everything about this book was incredible and I would highly recommend it to anyone and everyone who enjoys fiction, especially YA dystopian lit with a romantic subplot.

Overall, I found the book very enthralling I liked the prose of the book and found it unique and refreshing and gave the reader a deeper knowledge of Juliette's mind. I am rating highly for the actual writing more so than the plot, the writing was beautiful but the plot felt slow at the start but then quite rushed at the end.

Personally, I didn't like either Adam or Warner as characters so I am looking forward to their character development in the next book. Adam was bland, quite possessive and couldn't take a joke. Also, it was basically insta-love with Adam, which wasn't that appealing. Warner was creepy, sexist and controlling and made me feel uncomfortable at points and don't really see how he gets better. <
> especially as I believe he is the main love interest in the next books <</spoiler end>>, although I did enjoy his character at the beginning. I did like Kenji and James and hope we see more of them in future books.

Juliette as an MC was generally likeable and at some points, I found her character and bit boring and whiny but had so good moments too. The plot, especially the ending, was different to what I personally expected and that was good, I like a book that will keep me guessing, but again the ending was rushed to me. However, will continue to carry on the series.

Overall the story is very enjoyable.
The characters are interesting and it's fast paced. It's just that the writing style is very particular so I rate down to 4.5 instead of 5
