I enjoyed this a lot. The stars are more for the edition, it was only in checking Wikipedia after reading that I found the edition I have contained only four of the original ten stories.

But they were very good.

Sometimes maybe good, sometimes maybe shit.

This was decent though I expected something more visceral from what is routinely called a pioneering work of horror metafiction from the late nineteenth century. The premise is simple: across four tales, Chambers tells the story of a book called The Yellow King that eventually drives its reader insane. If you go for that fare in your reading you'll not be disappointed. Chambers is said to have been a significant inspiration for Lovecraft's writing and should be read for that alone.

DNF'd this one. It wasn't bad, it just couldn't hold my interest. Usually I'm all about the weird cosmic horror and unexplainable. But usually that's for things like The Magnus Archives, which ended up being something that held my attention. This one just couldn't.

Maybe I'll try again next year.
