I read this on the strength of it being the base material for the TV Series True Detective. And also because it was said to influence HP Lovecraft. The first half of the stories are quite excellent. Creepy tales of supernatural madness. But the last few all revolve around the Parisian Latin Quarter and the glimpses of the lives of a set of bohemian American expats who live there. It's purple, languid prose and ultimately pointless.

Personally, I found this book to be a victim of its own popularity. While the stories were incredibly engaging, I found myself often able to predict what the twist or ending of each chapter may be, simply due to the fact that this work's age prolific nature lead to it being an inspiration to so many works that came after it. That being said, that is my only complaint about my reading experience, and that is not an issue with this book or its author at all. I can completely understand why this book is so highly regarded, and I wish I would have been able to read this story when it first came out, without was spoiled by all the works it inspired.
