I read this for class. The stories weren't very memorable but they weren't bad either. They were okay. Overall, it was really interesting to see this writing style.

Reading this one has been a trip! I started trying to predict/analyze each story before I read it with a Tarot layout, to quite interesting results, but that proved too draining and slow for a book I wanted to just gulp down. The stories here are beautiful, and sad, with funny moments. Love and loss and a sense of humour are the only surviving things, and sometimes a sense of beauty too. I wish I could write stories like these.

Lorrie Moore's writing is a MASTERCLASS in short story writing and technique. If you write short stories then you need to read her work. Her prose is exquisite, original, witty, poignant, moving. The Collected Stories is an excellent compilation - you definitely get plenty of bang for your buck. I would read the earliest stories first which are at the back of the book, from her first published collection, 'Self-Help'. Lorrie has been a massive inspiration and influence to me as a writer. I have learnt so much from reading her work and subsequently been listed for my own short story in a short story competition. You owe it to yourself to sample Lorrie's work and this book is perfect for that.
