Iron Widow was recommended to me back in 2021 when it was published, and it's been on my TBR since. I'm really glad that I elected to get back to this read. A great fit for readers who enjoy fiesty femme protags, switching gender roles, disability representation, tropes around toxic masculinity and patriarchal values, with fantasy and sci-fi elements.

Mechas, Chinese history (?), and the life power of young women being leeched dry to fight aliens terrorizing the human race in the future. Our primary protag's initial goal is to avenge the death of her sister. Once she does this, her journey takes twists and turns that I didn't see coming.

Shit, I really really enjoyed this! Zetian is an amazing main character, even tho it all gets really dark, especially towards the end. I really understand her though, and her struggles make her actions understandable af. I really liked the fight descriptions, I could totally imagine the Pacific rim like battles and it was really exciting. I can only imagine the feeling of power it gives a young woman like her to pilot such a robot
and the devastation when she finds out that her and many other girls were kept at an intentional disadvantage for hundreds of years and killed because of it just for the men to keep their ego. No wonder she kills all the men in power she can ... Queen shit honestly. Or empress shit? Mh.
Anyway! I watched the authors YouTube channel before the book came out and I know I'm late to the party on this book as it's been on my shelf for some time but I really enjoyed their writing and I can't wait for the sequel next year!!

CHILLS. The rage, the revenge, the sit down little boy and let me handle it. Everything. I have been waiting for a book like this my whole life. I absolutely loved it. I want to reread it this instant. Absolutely stunning and I CANNOT WAIT FOR BOOK TWO.

A coming of age story in a dystopia hellscape where that means teens climb into body operated giant mechs to protect the country from "invading forces". Female rage in a society that treats women as disposable. Action was well written and dialogue was witty when it was meant to be.

Having studied some ancient Chinese history, I was hoping for a fun, adventurous fiction novel inspired by Empress Wu Zetian, and Xiran Jay Zhao does not disappoint! I felt gripped by the story and was often on the edge of my seat, hoping for these characters we were learning more about. I definitely enjoyed the way characters were all flawed, showing how no one could be guilt-free when attempting to move through the world of war, politics, and the public eye.

While I tend to want my character development not to be too rushed, there weren't many times I felt as though that was happening while I was reading. Considering how fast the plot moves and how much is covered (literally an entire rise to power starting from the very beginning), I was pleasantly surprised to see how much of the story was dedicated to learning about the characters and developing their relationships.

I love the way this book tackles the many stigmas in society. While it may appear over-the-top at first, it truly shows just how damaging it can be (for women, in particular) to be faced with constantly being underestimated and expected to conform to a strict expectation keeping you tethered down and subservient. I also liked how the book touched on class inequality, war propaganda, corrupt government, functioning with a physical disability, and queer identity within a society where gender roles are heavily enforced.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book, and will definitely recommend it to others.

I don't usually read sci-fi, but this book grabbed me by the throat and wouldn't let go.
