Very well rounded book, definitely enjoyable as an audiobook too as I listened to the entire thing in a day. đź–¤

I tried to like this book. And don't get me wrong some of the songs I actually liked. And the ending was so much better than the rest of the book. But the love interest is literally going to uni next year and she is doing her GCSEs. What. Eliie Pillai might be getting groomed is a better title. You can tell there's a lot of love put into the book. But it's just not the best read. Maybe because I am currently in "high school" and it is not the experience described which like I can suspend disbelief but it's just miles off.
Also Hayley was great but the fact she seemed to only like Jess now that she came out as bi is just so odd what on earth.
But the thing is it's not a bad book, the ending is good some of the songs are catchy (it's not revolutionary material but it's good for someone her age). It's just odd. The whole thing has so many twists with no indication of them. The writer is clearly good at writing in my opinion, the book itself just needs some work. I really do like the little doodles though and it felt like a book you shouldn't read in silence even though I did anyway in the end.

This book isn’t that bad… it’s nice to have a brown person go through these experiences of romance and boys and drinking but also at 15 it feels ?? Where’s the social hierarchy? The book is written for the younger end of young adults for sure. I listened to the audiobook but the songs were just so jarring, and green light by lorde was repeated so much I got the message the first time. Didn’t feel any connection to Ash so wasn’t bothered about the romance which I think was the main plot point here. The sense of other difficulties and mysteries were ok but some felt really odd, like the whole
teacher being not a nonce but in fact the parent… like…
. Found myself wanting to get through this book overall, but it’s not that offensive just a bit boring for me!

I’d say this was a 3.75, very close to 4 stars. It was such a fun, light-hearted read. I fell in love with Ellie the moment I started the book, she’s such a lovable character. The only thing I will say I struggled with was the text speak in this book. I know it’s a YA book but I feel like some of the slang used was a bit unrealistic and a bit of a stretch. I loved diving into all of Ellie’s relationships and how they all impact her life individually. I think reading this book definitely opened my eyes to some of the barriers that POC have, and cultural differences/barriers that are faced, which people may not even think about. I know when I was growing up there weren’t many YA books that represented POC and different religious backgrounds, so I think the fact that YA fiction is more diverse these days is amazing, and so beneficial to so many children/teens/young adults.
