This book felt incredibly existential, which I enjoyed. Also had a very straight forward writing style that made it a quick and easily digestible read. The main character was so apathetic toward every situation he encountered, which included killing a man, and his biggest complaint at times was that he was too hot and too tired to care. It’s frustrating to read and think about how detached he is, but this character also admitted that he felt so sure about his life and his death, that nothing truly mattered at all. Life is absurd, the justice system is absurd, making true meaning of our lives at times can feel absurd, and this book seems to explore that head on when confronted with the idea of death.

At first, I finished the book thinking, wait, what did I just read? But the more I sit with it, the more I see its depth. Camus’s writing is simple and easy to follow, and Meursault’s detachment is both frustrating and fascinating. On the surface it feels like a straightforward story, but there are so many layers that take time to sink in. The ending doesn’t really give you traditional closure, but leaves you with plenty to think about.
