I savored nearly every paragraph in this existential novel!

Two unlikely similar characters narrate their take on life and the community in their French neighborhood. Renée is the philosophical concierge to a bourgeois apartment building in Paris while Paloma, resident of said apartment, is wise beyond her thirteen years.

Exploring the absurd world through their eyes is enlightening, at times somber but invariably endearing.
Topped French best-seller lists for 30 consecutive weeks and is an international bestseller.

I really wanted to like this book, but found it far too tedious. There were parts of the book that were easy to read and connect to, but these were few in comparison to the longer stretches of philosophical thoughts. I also still struggle with the character of the young girl - I'm still not buying her desire to kill herself.

Love her writing style and philosophical musings. I thoroughly enjoyed this book from start to finish. I just couldn't find any flaws. This was loaned from the library but now I'm going to purchase it so that I can read it again.

Initially I was sure I would have to enforce my 100-page rule; if after 100 pages I'm not enjoying the book it gets set aside. The main characters seemed self-centered and irritating in many different ways. But, right about the time I was ready to set the book down things started to change. The main characters start to grow in way I did not anticipate and by the end I was sad that the story had come to a conclusion.

One of my favorites. The writing was wonderfully elegant, the characters perfectly molded, and the content both funny and moving. Now I need to tackle it in French...
