'Jupiter's Legacy Volume 1' by Mark Millar seems to have a SF title, but the story is another in a line of superhero deconstructionist fables. The art by Frank Quitely is worth the price of admission.

Then: A group of people find a mysterious island that gives them each unique powers. They use these to fight evil in whatever form they find it. Along the way they find fame and admiration. They also settle down and get married.

Now: The children of those famous heroes have superpowers , but they also have mommy and daddy issues. Some live the sort of spoiled life you'd expect. Some want to follow in their parents footsteps, but there are no supervillains left. Some want to change the world.

I like the setup, but it feels like it's kind of been done before. Most of the characters are interesting and you do feel a bit towards them. The violence seems a bit over the top in it's gore factor. The art by Frank Quitely is very good, and the coloring is different than in most superhero books moving to richer tones versus primary colors. A good effort. I'm interested to see where this goes.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Diamond Book Distributors and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

I didn't warm to this at first, I wasn't sure if I'd even finish let alone leave a 'meh' review - but towards the end it was very good.

There's nothing greatly original here (Watchmen meets the Golden Age) but what there is is done with style, and I've given it an extra two stars purely for the way one of the "heroes" dispatches the "villains" near the end.

Interesting, but covers too much ground too quickly to be satisfying.

This is Mark Millar's commentary on the superhero genre. Like everything else Millar does, it gives a new, fresh perspective on a subject that is otherwise getting a bit tired and long-in-the-tooth.

It captures a century of super hero history in its world -- the origin of super powers, the social and political effect these heroes had on the world, and the effect the world had on them and their offspring, the issues with identity, celebrity and addiction their offspring face -- and while it feels rushed at a few points, it is at the expense of being rather epic in scale.

It's a great read, with some parallels to graphic novels such as [b:Watchmen|472331|Watchmen|Alan Moore|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1327866860s/472331.jpg|4358649] and the more recent [b:C.O.W.L.|22358461|C.O.W.L. Volume 1 Principles of Power|Kyle Higgins|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1409780173s/22358461.jpg|41765488]. My only complaint is that I want to read further, as Book One does not tell the complete story.

Full disclosure: I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for a review.

Simply superb. It needs to be taken and read as a whole, with the other book.
