Loved this series, potentially even more than “Caraval.” It reads seamlessly, very little review needed between books for me. Love her writing style, the mix of details and character building plus pace. The chapters always end on a suspenseful note, making it love quick. Minus one star because the pacing got strange at the end and I felt like she was jamming 200 pages into 50 pages to tie everything up.
It was really fun just being in this world for three books in a row. I do wish we'd gotten a better answer for why Jacks' kiss didn't kill Evangeline. We were told that only someone who would never love him would survive his kiss. So I expected a loophole of some kind but instead Evangeline just seemed to say "I don't want the curse to happen so badly that it won't happen." And that worked lol
I wish we knew where Luc and Marisol were this whole book? I hope Lala and Castor get together because I was into their chemistry.
Evangeline feeling bad for not remembering things faster so that Jacks wouldn't be hurt was so annoying. Girl, you did NOTHING wrong.
I find that I don't love the whole "I can't be with my love because it will put them in danger...but screw that I'm gonna try to be in their lives all the time" thing. Jacks pushed Evangeline away. And then just kept showing up. If you want to be with her, tell her what's going on and run away. You're like a demi-god lol
The whole deadly kiss thing is also fascinating because...do these teenagers not know about how prostitutes draw the line at kissing? You can be horny for each other and not kiss. Obviously I know that's not an option but I just kept thinking it.
The world was just fun and I love the fairy tale style and I thoroughly enjoy Garber's books. Time for Alchemy of Secrets! And Spectacular!

This was a perplexing reading experience because I consistently had to reread scenes to figure out what was happening and why, only to realize that there was truly no explanation. It went beyond whimsy and magic; there were genuine plot holes, scenes that felt disconnected, and random new characters and magical plot devices. I wish I would've liked it and maybe I would've if I felt fully immersed in the world from book one or if I had read the Caraval series first, but came away feeling unsatisfied.
Spoiler
A few questions of the many questions I have: Why is Eva even still alive after the kiss? How did Eva get her memories back so easily? What did Jacks do with his heart? When did Jacks disappear when Eva was reading her letter? Who was trying to kill Eva? Where are Luc and Marisol?
