I love reading books that have a highly developed sense of place, as this one does. Amick has developed a wonderful setting with some marvelous characters, but in the end I found that it didn't quite deliver on the promise. When I finished the book my first through was, "That's how it ends? How dissappointing."

Still, I have to say that I'm glad I read it, and would probably recommend it to others. I hope that Amick writes a sequel; I think there's still great promise in Weneshkeen.

And I agree that the town map is a great feature of the book.

I'm going to have to side with many other reviewers of this book -- the minister's ending made me feel sick and creepy for even reading it. It went...a little too far. Barf.
I have to admit, I read this book at a pretty good pace which is always nice. I enjoy books that swap character perspectives from chapter to chapter, but I felt as though each of the character's plots kind of fizzled, and the humor was pretty "meh."

Enjoyable in some respects, as I did laugh out loud more than once. But most of the characters were just too shallowly drawn, except possibly Roger Drinkwater. I just didn't care what happened to these people.

The ending really killed it for me.

A surprising literary amble through the lives of people in a small town in Michigan. At times just sensible humor and, at others, darkly comic, Amick’s book feels like the kind of book that should be in every gift shop on Michigan’s Gold Coast. The visiting Fudgies would get a kick out of it, and I’d imagine locals would see themselves within the pages, as well.

I wavered a bit between 4 and 5 stars on this.

I'm sooooo lucky I found this in a bargain bin immediately before road tripping through all the areas mentioned in this hilarious and moving book. I couldn't look at jetskis or fudge in the same way though.... Damn fudgies....

I absolutely loved this book. A bit like Richard Russo, but set in Michigan. I loved the character development and the interwoven stories. I see Amick has a new book out - I need to check it out!
