The framing premise is that some big 'n' burly, hard drinking, hard fighting, seen-it-all cynic of a nurse who loves his mama and shows tiresome flashes of a golden heart, indulges his God complex by euthanizing the dying criminally insane in exchange for their titillating confessions of the truly juicy tidbits they've never before revealed. Okay, he claims it's actually about listening to society's abandoned and trying to understand the deeper "why," but you get the drift in any case.

The patient "confessions," much like the framing material, are all written in a similar first person voice and read more like casual anecdotes than proper short stories, although one could argue this is appropriate for the given context. The portraits of the characters being presented vary in plausibility and insight, and the entire book could have used another pass by a copy editor. All that being said, the thing hooked me and kept me entertained -- enough so that I'll likely be reading other installments. I suppose that's ultimately what matters with fiction.

I picked this up thinking it was an actual true crime novel; however it was not. Either way, I wasn’t disappointed in the confessions. The narration was a little obscure, but it was entertaining even so. I’d love for the confessions to be a bit darker and more detailed, but the stories keep your attention. This is a great novel idea. I’m looking forward to picking up the next novel.

This book came recommended under another work and I was really intrigued by the concept! I have never read anything with this concept, and I quite enjoyed it.

I liked the use of the unreliable narrator as you were constantly questioning his version of events and his goodness. I couldn’t tell whether he was a good person or bad person and I think that’s the point of the story. All the stories were equally interesting and I was super intrigued all the way through. There were little bits of tension placed in key points that made you wanting more. It was also a really good length, where you didn’t get bored because it was too long and it didn’t feel like there was more to be said.

The writing was nothing to write home about though. It was quite basic, simple and there were some spelling errors throughout. It didn’t really affect the way that I read it, but the spelling errors did make me stumble when I was reading. I think editing is crucial and things like spelling and punctuation errors shouldn’t be in books. It really affects the reading experience. The writing just wasn’t spectacular, and I know it’s not supposed to be, but that’s just something I picked up. I like to be wowed and impressed by writing and just wasn’t here.

Overall, I would recommend if you are looking for something a bit different and if you love good crime fiction!
