Epic fantasy heist novel with the most incredible cast of charaters that hold their stance all over the alignment chart. There's fun, there's banter and there is beautiful and dramatic inner monologues and snappy one-liners. You get to dive into most of the characters' inner lives and it's incredible how well they are seperated from each other, and how each character can have a different perception of each of the others in their group. Each dynamic is unique and is reflected in their views of each other.

Leigh Bardugo’s writing was just amazing. Her world building was incredibly detailed and she made all of the characters come to life in such a beautiful way. The characters were what made the book so amazing.

(first read: 01.27.21)

i now understand why people liked six of crows more than the og grisha trilogy. first off, we are now following five of the main characters in third person’s point of view. i usually don’t like this kind of set up because i always end up having a bias character and would want to skim through the other characters’ povs, thus only really half reading the story.

but the soc characters are all very intriguing that i didn’t feel sleepy nor bored in any part of the book. i loved the diversity. we have characters that are kerch, ravkan, suli, zemeni, shu, and fjerdan. and despite that all of them have their own scars and trauma, and are pretty much stronger now — they still have weaknesses. the characters are so realistic. my first thoughts when i learned nina was a heartrender was, “ok so that’s an instant win?” no. they gave nina weaknesses that HAVE justice.

moreover, i love that kaz isn’t the stereotype cold op guy with a dark past yada yada. he is a work in progress. and boy he has doubts and needed someone else — inej — to believe in him!!! most importantly, HE FAILS. despite being called dirtyhands and all the crazy stuff he could do (like literally yank an eyeball out of a person and stuff cloth to his eyesocket) he still has layers. we love a good villainy main character with gray morals <3 jk

i loved matthias’ character development (and even how he and nina are literally enemies AND lovers) and that jesper wasn’t the standard comic relief character. i felt kinda sad that kaz wouldn’t trust him again, maybe, but he kinda had no choice but was also kinda at fault too. i want to see more from wylan!! hopefully in the next book.

i’m also looking forward to jesper using more of his fabrikator nature. i can’t wait to read what will happen next. i will literally cry if nina dies or if inej is hurt. ALSO OH MY GOD THEY’RE CALLING THE RAVKA CAPITAL

overall it’s highkey a 5/5 !!! i read it quite longer than my average though because i wanted to digest everything and fully understand what was happening (it’s not easy). looking forward to read crooked kingdom next!

(second read: 11.23.21)

i did not read crooked kingdom next. nine months later, i still haven’t so much as touch that book. no, kidding. i did try to. but having already been spoiled about the [redacted], i didn’t think i could handle it. now in an attempt to finally face my fears, i reread six of crows. and it felt like coming back home.

i am definitely looking forward to read crooked kingdom next (after a few filler lighthearted read, maybe. let’s try to be realistic now.)

I started reading in the mornings and that helps me to read more so i finally finished it.
I liked the setting and the story so much more than the shadow and bone series, however reading the series back-to-back I'm starting to be tired of this world and kinda cannot wait to go back to some other worlds and stories. Luckily I only have one more book ahead of me.

This was so much fun! I do think that it lives up to the hype that surrounds it. The heist plot kept me engaged throughout, but what really stood out were the characters. I love books that include a group of characters, each with their own background and viewpoint, but who must all come together to work towards a common goal. The banter was fantastic, and the way that each character's backstory was revealed little by little was artful.

Though the overall story is much different, Six of Crows gave me slight Lunar Chronicles vibes (one of my favorite series of all time). I think it's mainly because both, again, follow a group of characters working together to pull off (a) risky plan(s). The prison break-in was especially gripping—reading the alternating POVs and watching the pieces fall into place as the characters roamed the Ice Court was intense! Perhaps Six of Crows will earn a spot among my all-time favorite series, but I'll have to read the sequel in order to decide.

I'm giving this book five stars, but I still have a few minor complaints. First, there's a trope that I don't like that I am pretty sure is going to be used: The way the story is going, I feel like the six main characters are all going to end up pairing up with each other in relationships. I could be wrong, but it certainly looks like the story could head in that direction. I'm not necessarily *complaining,* but I find this trope unrealistic and sometimes annoying. On that same note, there was one relationship (or at least the beginnings of one) in particular that seemed underdeveloped—like it came out of nowhere. Additionally, there were a few times at which I found the alternating POVs a bit difficult to differentiate between. The whole book is in third person limited, which means that the POVs are still significant, but I think that also meant that the story sometimes fell into a vague "narrator" tone instead of the internal monologue of a specific character.

But overall, I very much enjoyed Six of Crows and I will be continuing on to Crooked Kingdom!

SO SO GOOD. these characters are actually so amazing i would do anything for them. the representation is everywhere and it is outstanding. these characters are so deep and amazing and it’s so hard not to love and relate with them. the plot is so fun and interesting and will keep your attention.
