Wow. It took me a while to get into this book due to college taking up a lot of my time and being in a reading slump, but once I got sucked in, I couldn't put the book down. I loved being able to see each character's point of view and learning about their backstories. Normally, I don't really enjoy separate POV's, finding myself naturally gravitating to and waiting for a specific characters chapter. But this book? I enjoyed each character's point of view equally, and I sped through these chapters like crazy.  The overall story and backstories of each character are all so fleshed-out; I loved being able to piece together bits of the story over time. I especially enjoyed the plot twists -- nothing is ever as it seems. And I absolutely adored seeing the growth that the characters went through. I truly truly hope that Crooked Kingdom lives up to my expectations because my expectations are to the moon from Six of Crows.

Easily five (six) stars. Though, I considered being petty and put a 4 just because it ended on a cliffhanger but thankfully, I had picked up the Crooked Kingdom as well. Leigh make them canon, you amazing author 🫵

Fantastic read. Little slow at the beginning but I loved seeing the way their relationships grew.

Summary:
All in all, „Six of Crows“ tells an adventurous, compelling story about an impossible, dangerous heist. While the book is quite good in some aspects such as storytelling, diversity of characters and a compelling plot, there are some issues.

Worldbuilding:
As I don’t have any experience with the Grisha universe outside of „Six of Crows“, I can’t really say much about the worldbuilding in general. I think it’s sufficient and fitting for this story and much mystery remains to be explored in the second part. However, the introduction into the topics and concepts in the beginning is a bit lacking for new readers.

Characters:
This might be the biggest issue I have with the book. While I especially like Kaz, Inej and Jesper as characters, their backstories, motivations and their appearances, some characters strongly irk me.
Honestly, Matthias and Nina’s romance and character arc is unsatisfying and patchy at best and very problematic at worst. Honestly, it’s not even adressed, that he was literally part of a genocidal zealot group that tried to exterminate Nina’s entire people.

Plot:
I like the plot, it’s easy to follow most times and wraps up nicely in the end and leaves room for the sequel.
I have a bit of personal issues with the end as I find it unsatisfying. Abducting Inej and making Nina into a parem addict and then leaving this for the sequel is a bit meh for me, but the rest about it is great sooo…

Sometimes the pacing is a bit funky, especially in the middle part where many suspenseful arcs are interrupted by an annoying flashback.
Especially Nina or Matthias lol.

Tldr:
It’s a good story, not showstoppingly great. Points get docked for characters and pacing.
