This was actually completely brilliant, and I'm so glad I read it! Where to start? First and foremost, Ian Doescher's understanding of and love for Shakespearean language is so apparent. I was constantly marveling at how he adapted Mean Girls to iambic pentameter so perfectly! I'm definitely not a Bard scholar, but I loved the Elizabethan allusions Doescher made throughout. He didn't need to, but I'm so glad he firmly grounded this in Shakespeare's canon. Doescher also has his characters reference contemporary movies and songs, and the combination is just really smart and funny and clever.
Much Ado About Mean Girls is the exact type of story that Shakespeare did write about in his comedies, so while it seems a little odd at first, Tina Fey's story really works as a Shakespearean play. In a faux-epic manner, we see friendship, reputations, and love destroyed by deceit but quickly mended by a change of heart. I think this fits right in with Much Ado About Nothing, The Taming of the Shrew, Twelfth Night, and all of Shakespeare's other magnificent comedies. He is, after all, the father of the Rom-Com. . .

If you aren't comfortable with Shakespearean language, or you don't know the movie Mean Girls, this won't mean anything to you (even if you do know the movie, not being comfortable with the language might be difficult). If both hold true, this is a funny way to look at the movie and at Shakespeare's plots.
