Keefe immerses himself in the details of his articles, spending a great deal of time on first person research. He travels to some insalubrious locations and interviews some rather dangerous people, and the reader benefits from his courage. If the subject of a piece won’t comment, Keefe is able to craft a story - a true story - about that person by sifting and collating through all his research.

This series of articles were published in the New Yorker magazine over a period of 10-12 years. The subjects are varied but the constant is someone trying to get away with something illegal. The article on Anthony Bourdain doesn’t fit that theme though Bourdain was enough of a rogue where I can see why Keefe wanted to include him. I especially appreciated each coda with an update on the people profiled.

This is excellent true crime journalism, meticulously written, thoroughly fact-checked, and endlessly fascinating.
