The Incendiaries

Ehhhh, I liked the summary way better than the book. The writing was kind of odd and hard to follow at times (although maybe that's because I read books right before I fall asleep). Interesting characters, but just not as much there as I would have hoped.

Incredible. Stunning, original prose. The only book in years that I properly couldn't put down

Great writing but the story ultimately felt flat to me.

The Incendiaries follows our main character Will, who was once deeply religious but has since lost his faith and is still reeling from that, who meets Phoebe, a girl with a lot of trauma, and starts to date her. In comes the elusive figure of John Leal, who is the leader of a religious group that knows things about Phoebe that she hasn't told anyone. Phoebe becomes deeper and deeper enmeshed in the group as Will struggles with how to get her out of it.

The best part about this book was definitely the writing, it was incredible. Some reviewers have described it as pretentious, but I really, really enjoyed it. However, the story didn't really live up to my expectations. The novel is about a cult but the bulk of the story is just about Will and Phoebe's relationship. Things start to get interesting once she starts becoming brainwashed, but that takes a while. And then when things do happen, its mainly off-screen. So while I did like this book overall, I don't know that I'd recommend it to many people, because I think you need a lot of patience with it.

Lastly, I want to talk about the sexual assault. I won't go into details, but I don't really like how it was handled. The way it was spoken about made it seem like a minor mistake rather than something terrible and life-changing. Maybe this is due to the character's POV we were reading it from. But I do think it could have been handled better.
