Beautiful. Weeks later and it lingers in my mind. It happens so simply. Are we all susceptible?

This book was okay. I neither loved it nor hated it. I'm glad I read it and was happy to do so since it was short. It was slow and never full grabbed my attention, but I was interested enough to continue due to the length. I really did appreciate the cult viewpoint from a cult members loved one, I found that bit interesting. There is nothing to rave about but also nothing to really complain about, either.

Two stars. This was just not the book for me. I heard glowing reviews of this novel so I had high expectations. In the end, I found it disappointing. The plot was thin. The characters were undeveloped. The writing style was annoying (no quotes for dialog, no indication of timeline as things jumped back and forth). I just never could get myself to liking -- to caring about -- any of the characters. Reading this book was tedious and felt like an unpleasant homework assignment.

There's no quotation marks. I literally did not know if someone was speaking or not.

A fascinating and unique novel on cults, but I can see why this isn't for everyone. I personally enjoyed the quick/short prose and the structure of the novel because we're seeing events develop from John Leal's, Will's, and Phoebe's perspectives. The majority of the book is told from Will's point of view and it made me wonder if he was a reliable character since he was so in love with Phoebe. I wish there were more chapters devoted to Phoebe but I think it gives a good idea about how we will never *truly* understand how people get attached to cults.

The Incendiaries heavily focused on faith and religion, but I still really enjoyed it! I think it's a great book to discuss with others. I can't wait to see what else R.O. Kwon writes!
